The Door Dude Refinishing Process

1. Protect the entryway. We remove your door, set it on sawhorses, and tape off the opening with painter’s plastic. We remove the hardware, clean the glass, and mask it before sanding.
2. Sand to bare wood. We work through 60, 120, and 220 grit. We sand the trim by hand and use power sanders only on flat surfaces.
3. Match and approve the stain. We check the color against the interior side of the door, stain the trim first, then the flat areas, and get your approval before sealing.
4. Apply four coats of protection. We apply General Finishes Exterior 450 in satin or gloss, allowing each coat to dry. After the third coat, we lightly sand with a 220-grit finish block and remove the dust before applying the final coat.
5. Rehang and check the door. We carefully score and remove the glass masking, reinstall the hardware, rehang the door with security screws, and install a new sweep. We check that the door closes smoothly, the deadbolt works, and there’s no daylight around the weatherstripping.
6. Walk through the finished work. We inspect the door with you, clean up the work area, and review your two-year, no-questions-asked warranty.

Optional maintenance is available every two years at half the cost of a full refinish. Ask about our military and first responder discounts.
